I believe this is simply the best book about solar cooking and other sustainable cooking options currently available anywhere. It is very carefully researched, drawing from dozens of sources and interviews with experts, not to mention dozens of first-hand solar cooking experiments. I know there are several other solar cookbooks on the market, but most of them have not been updated in decades, even though in some cases the copyright date may have been updated. This is important because interest in solar cooking has been rapidly growing, meaning new equipment, Web sites and resources are now available that are not even mentioned in most of the older books. As it says right on the cover, this is a book for the 21st century. Lisa Rayner is not just a solar cook, but also an experienced writer and avid environmentalist. Her previous book, Growing food in the southwest mountains: A permaculture approach to home gardening above 6,500 feet in Arizona, New Mexico, southern Colorado and southern Utah set the standard for excellence on that topic. Her latest book on solar cooking brings Rayner’s many talents together in a tour de force that will be greatly appreciated by solar cooks everywhere. I can also say that the recipes are simply delicious. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I am the husband of the author. (Lisa Rayner has also written a book called Wild Bread – Handbaked sourdough artisan breads in your own kitchen This 2009 bread book includes a chapter on solar cooking.)
